Fresh from the Studio is a virtual program for W&TW artist members to share what they are working on now. During 10-minute presentations, each artist will present work in progress, newly finished artworks, and recent or upcoming projects. Fresh from the Studio is your chance to see what is new and hear from contemporary artists. This program is free and open to the public.

In this Fresh from the Studio, we will hear from artists Marsha Dorsey-Outlaw, Veronica Ibargüengoitia, and Mohini Tellakat

About the Artists

Marsha Dorsey-Outlaw is on the Texas Commission for the Arts Artist in Education Roster, enjoying extended
residencies at The Community Artists’ Collective and the Austin Children’s Museum. Dorsey-Outlaw was the first artist in
residence and community liaison in the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston Education Department and as Project
Manager, her focus was community engagement with the Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens.
As founder of Cultured Pearls Creative, Dorsey-Outlaw is an art enrichment instructor, certified through the Harris County Department of Education, school districts and municipalities throughout Texas, and a teaching artist with Young Audiences of Houston. Dorsey-Outlaw was the first art instructor certified in the International Middle Years Curriculum (IMYC) and International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme for visual art (IB), having composed the inaugural fine art curriculum for St. Stephen’s Episcopal School, Houston, and led ceramics workshops at The Forum at Memorial Woods, in Healthcare, Assisted Living and senior community from 2014 until the Pandemic of 2020. Dorsey-Outlaws work is an investigation of the narratives that motifs bear in the rhythm of textile patterns, in the tender threads of metal or silk, in contours of wood or stone, in finely cast plastics. The meditative movement is not at all unlike so many rituals of prayer, petition and communion. Like many who seek to find the extraordinary in that which is ordinary, and the sardonic assignment of the reverse, Dorsey-Outlaws work allows her to play with matters that live in our intimate intersections.

Veronica Ibargüengoitia was born in Mexico City and immigrated to the United States in 2009. She holds a Certificate in Painting and Sculpture from The Glassell School of Arts, MFAH, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Design from Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City. Ibargüengoitia was part of the MFAH Block program and was awarded the 2020 Houston Artadia Fellowship Award Brooklyn, New York; she is a finalist of the 2021 Prisma Art Prize Rome and the recipient of the Voertman-Ardoin Fellowship Grant in 2022. Her work has been exhibited at the Holocaust Museum in Houston, Texas; Collect for the Culture III, Texas; Contemporary Art Center, New Orleans, Louisiana; commercial galleries in Mexico City, Portugal. Ibargüengoitia is a member of Latin American Women Artists in Houston, Sociedad Mexicana de Autores de las Artes Plasticas Mexico. She has had an active art social practice for eight years as a Regional Workshop Coordinator for AMSIF Houston, a program that assists immigrants in their education. She recently collaborated with Harris County Cultural Arts Council at Wallis, coordinating their community workshops for Hispanic Heritage
Month. Ibargüengoitia is currently working on installations and researching humans’ sociological and adaptation processes
with the dwelling phenomena, displacement, and uprooting in an ongoing project about interconnecting different people and places across the globe.

Mohini Tellakat, PhD creates spaces where people have permission to play, be curious, and explore different sides of themselves by inserting themselves into the visual storyscapes she creates. Working in the space between seriousness and play, her 10+ years of experience in mixed media abstraction, portraiture, and expertise in data & psychology allow her to see people for who they truly are and to hold them in their highest potential. In her fine art process, Mohini focuses on layers, textures, story panels, and writing to create these storyscapes. Very often, she will layer a new work on top of an old one, even painting over works that have already been shown publicly in order to reflect a multitude of seasons of life within a single piece.
