Cuban Film Posters
An exhibition of 40 posters from 1969 – 1979 from the Cuban Film Institute.
In 1979 three members of Women & Their Work visited Cuba and returned with thirty-six silk screened posters in 30” x 20” (76cm x 52cm) format, produced at the Instituto Cubano de Arte e Industria Cinematografico (ICAIC). All but two of the posters are for films, primarily produced in Cuba, but also Czechoslovakia, “Soviet” Russia, Japan, Spain, Hungary, and the United States.
“Cuban posters are among the most collectible in the world, and the Cuban film posters produced by ICAIC (Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry, the Cuban Film Institute) are among the most coveted. The film posters in editions of 500 silkscreen posters, were usually made for each film shown in Cuba, both Cuban and foreign. ICAIC had its own team of poster artists, including the greats—Bachs, Ñiko, Azcuy, Reboiro—and from time to time one or another of Cuba’s best artists contributed designs.” – CubaUpdate
