Doña Rosita’s Jalapeño Kitchen-1996
A gifted comedienne and captivating storyteller, Ruby Nelda Perez brought the one-woman play by Rodrigo Duarte Clark to life hilariously.
In the town of Salsipuedes (“get-out-if-you-can”), Doña Rosita invites you to the last supper as she gets ready to vacate her little restaurant and home. Forced out to make room for the new shopping mall, Rosita reflects on life in the Barrio and beyond.
Ruby Nelda Perez opened up a whole new world to the majority of Austin theatergoers. There was very little bi-lingual theater performed in Austin, and opportunities to hear the stories of Chicano/Latino writers were particularly rare.
Perez is a San Antonio-based actress who performs bilingually in English and Spanish. She has toured throughout the U.S. and Latin America and has received several awards including Best Actress at the Chamizal International Theater Festival.
