Women & Their Work presented “Looking Inward: Photographers Photograph Themselves,” a photography exhibition featuring self-portraits by Austin photographers, September 10-0ctober 7 at Photoworks Gallery, 308 1/2 Congress. The exhibition was curated by Ellen Wallenstein, Professor of Photography at the University of Texas Fine Arts Department.

“Photographers are fascinated with taking pictures of themselves,” said Ellen Wallenstein, the show’s curator. “Self-portraits not only keep a record of ourselves, and record events; they also can be used to stage visual fantasies. Photographers are usually behind the camera; turning it around for a self-portrait can be as telling and interesting as a view of the other side.”

Self-portraits of 40 Austin photographers were shown in the exhibit, both in black and white and color.
