RAPE
Women & Their Work hosted the traveling show RAPE, which originated at the Ohio State University Gallery of Fine Art. The show was dedicated to the memory of Ana Mendieta, whose unexpected death on September 8, 1985, underscores the violence in our society.
RAPE consisted of 29 works, in various media, that provided the artists’ interpretation of rape, its violent realities, and the survivors’ resurgence of self-respect. Its opening at the Dougherty Arts Center was accompanied by comments from State Representative Debra Danburg from Houston and State Senator Cyndi Taylor from San Antonio. Susan Brownmiller, Jenny Holzer, and Barbara Kruger served as jurors.
Artists included: Jerri Allyn, Ida Applebroog, Josely Caravalho, Sue Coe, Ann Fessler, Margaret Harribson, Marcy Hermansader, Stephanie Brody Lederman, Helen Mangelsdorf, Paul Marcus, Lynette Molnar, Paulette Nenner, Deanie Pass, Pat Ralph, Leela Ramotar, Nancy Spero, and Susan Zurcher.
The exhibit was sponsored by Women & Their Work, the Texas Chapter of the National Organization for Women, Austin Center for Battered Women, Austin Rape Crisis Center, and Austin YWCA.
