Living/Working Space

Join us for “Living/Working Space” a conversation about the changing contexts of the artist & their studios. In conjunction with Christie Blizard’s “When I was 16, I saw the White Buffalo,” we welcome these guest artists: Judy Rushin, Robin Germany, Sasha Dela, Sara Waters, and Christie Blizard. Christie Blizard, lives and sleeps in her studio, an experience that creates an interesting dynamic. Day and night, work and relaxation, public and private, studio and home, these boundaries or lack there of will be among the topics of discussion.

Christie Blizard, Lubbock, TX. Artist and an Assistant Professor of Painting at Texas Tech University.Christie Blizard received her MFA from Georgia State University in Painting and Drawing in 2005 and her BFA in Painting from Herron School of Art, IUPUI, with Highest Distinction in 2001. She currently works in a variety of media including drawing, painting, public works, animation, violin performance, and installation. Since 2006, she has been featured in over 50 national and international art exhibitions including those curated by several renowned art figures such as: internationally known artists Mel Chin and Pradip Malde; Dr Charissa Terranova, Assistant Professor of Aesthetic Studies and Director of Centraltrak Artist Residency at UT Dallas; Rene Barilleaux, Chief Curator at the McNay Art Museum in San Antonio, Carter Foster, Curator of Drawings at the Whitney Museum of American Art; Heather Pesanti, Assistant Curator of Contemporary Art at the Carnegie Museum of Art, and Antoine Guerrero, Director of Exhibitions at PS1.

Sasha Dela, Houston, TX.  Artist, Art History teacher at Houston Community College and part of The SkyDivein Houston. Sasha Dela received her MFA from California College of the Arts in 2005 and her BFA in painting from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design in 2000. She also participated in the 2000 Florence Honors Program at the Accademia Di Belle Arte (Florence, Italy). In January 2005, Sasha Dela worked on a collaborative project with writer Solidad DeCosta at the Lucid Art Foundation. She completed a residency at the Santa Fe Art Institute in 2003. Her work has been exhibited at the Pulliam Deffenbaugh Gallery, Portland, OR ; the San Francisco Arts Commission Gallery, San Francisco, CA; Arthouse, Austin, TX; Women & Their Work, Austin, TX; and Diverseworks, Houston, TX.

Robin Germany, Lubbock, TX. Artist and an Associate Professor of Photography at Texas Tech University. Robin Germany first began experimenting with photography in the green half bath behind the laundry room. Her father taught her how to develop film and her mother reminded her that film is cheap. She studied philosophy as an undergraduate and subsequently earned an MFA in photography. She has received numerous grants & awards for her work including a Polaroid Artist’s Award and a regional NEA grant. Collections include: Center for Creative Photography, Polaroid, The Boise Art Museum, Texas Tech University Museum of Art and numerous private collections. Her photographic work is an inquiry into the nature of being human.

Judy Rushin, Tallahassee, FL. Artist, supported by university teaching job as Assistant Professor of Paintingat Florida State University. Judy Rushin’s work explores relationships between people and spatial environments through painting, sculpture, and installation. Her work has appeared across the US and in Korea including Aqua Art Miami, Art and Literature Laboratory Cambridge, MA, Prospect 1-Satellite New Orleans, Athens Institute for Contemporary Art, Mass MoCA, and Soho20 New York. She is the recipient of numerous grants including an Art-for-City-Spaces grant from the City of Atlanta’s Bureau of Cultural Affairs, a Summer Research Grant and an Arts and Humanities Program Enhancement Grant from Florida State University. Her work will be featured in New American Paintings, no.100.

Sara Waters, Lubbock, TX. Artist and Professor in Sculpture at Texas Tech University. Sara Waters has artwork in collections from The Institute of Contemporary Ceramic Art, Shigaragi, Japan, Southwestern Bell, Compaq Computers and the TTU Musuem.  Her sculpture was recently exhibited in the international juried exhibition, “ISC@GRS, Figuratively Speaking, Hamilton, New Jersey and Groot Foundation Grant Recipients Exhibition at Navy Pier, Chicago, Illinois.  Waters co-chaired the 7th Texas Sculpture Symposium in 2004, which effectively jump-started the statewide Sculpture Network of Texas.  She again co-chaired the 9th Texas Sculpture Symposium in 2006 which hosted over 100 professional and student sculptors from throughout the state in fall 2006.
