Women & Their Work organized a series of symposia to coincide with the Rape exhibition. All events took place at the Dougherty Arts Center. Symposia topics included:

April 11:

“The Fear that Binds,” a film and discussion

Self-Defense Demonstration

 

April 13:

“The Power of Images” – slide show and discussion by Dr. Juanita Firestone of the University of Texas Sociology Department.

 

April 14

“Sticks and Stones May Break My Bones, But Words Will Never Hurt Me???” – discussion of emotional abuse by representatives of the Austin Rape Crisis Center and the Austin Center for Battered Women. Discussion followed by a panel on the therapeutic response to abuse by Austin-area counselors and therapists.

 

April 15

Self-Defense Demonstration by Austin YWCA

“Male Aggression and Rape Socialization” – discussion on male sexual aggression and violence as a part of the idealized and stereotypical masculine role, by Alfred Maldonado of the Austin Rape Crisis Center.

 

April 16

“More than Skin Deep: Sexual Harassment in the Workplace” – discussion on strategies and response to sexual harassment by Susan Adair and representatives of the Women’s Advocacy Project.

 

April 20:

“The Sexual Representation of Women” – slide show and discussion by Ann Robison of the Texas Chapter of the National Organization for Women.

 

April 21

“Is This Really Rape?” – discussion of date and marital rape by representatives of the Austin Rape Crisis Center and the Austin Center for Battered Women. Texas N.O.W. members discussed upcoming legislation on marital rape.

 

April 22:

Self-Defense Demonstration by Austin YWCA.

“Women Penetrated by Violence” – discussion on violent sexual assault by members of the Austin Rape Crisis Center.
