Based in Houston, Texas
Kathy Drago is a native Houstonian and loves her hometown —a fine place for arts, food, and opportunity. She received a Theater Arts degree from University of Houston and worked for a decade at The Comedy Workshop, Houston’s first improvisational comedy club. During that time she acted, directed, and taught comedy improvisation classes to countless Houstonians. Then she taught theater in public schools before becoming a school counselor and principal. All the while, she drew and painted as much as possible. Upon retirement, she started taking classes at Glassell School of Art and is currently an artist in the Glassell Block XX, a program for emerging Houston artists with independent practices.
Kathy has a home studio and a studio at the Silos at Sawyer Yards. She has exhibited work in and around Houston and was a Big Show award winner in 2017. Her winning painting titled, I am so UPSET!, was the first old woman she painted. Since then she has painted around a hundred old women and, as she paints, she fills in the blanks as their life stories swirl around in her head.
