Based in Austin, TX
Growing up in Los Angeles with easy access to city, mountains and the ocean, Robin Gary developed a broad appreciation of her urban and natural surroundings. People, animals and the stories that bring them together inspire Robin’s mixed-media sculptural work. Using clay, glass, toys, metal, paper and, sometimes, even trash, she creates literal pieces that often have an absurd feel but are no less serious in their message. Inspiration for her work comes from experience and her imagination derived from extensive research in ecology and environmental issues as well as conversations with friends, family and the community at large.
Robin has a degree in Applied Mathematics from UCLA and did graduate work in Geophysics in New Mexico. She has been an artist ever since she could hold a crayon and made the choice to be a full-time artist and community educator after 20 years in the science and technology industries. Robin has exhibited her sculptural work in Maryland, Virginia, Washington D.C and Texas. She has taught clay and fused glass techniques in community settings in Gaithersburg, Maryland, Plano, TX and now at the Dougherty Art Center in Austin.
