Deborah Hay | New Book and Film Screening

In celebration of Using the Sky, Women & Their Work is pleased to host the  iconic choreographer Deborah Hay for a selection of readings and a film screening.

Deborah Hay is an internationally renowned dance artist whose unique approach to bodily practice has had a lasting impact on American choreography. Her commitment to dance as a process is as exquisite as it is provoking. Rooted in NYC’s 1960s experimental Judson Dance Theater in New York, of which Hay was a founding member, her work has evolved through experimentation with a use of language that is unique to dance. Using the Sky is an exploration and articulation of Hay’s process, focusing on several of her most recent works. The newly-released expanded edition is beautifully redesigned by Wesleyan University Press with additional materials and a cover photo by Ann Hamilton. Signed copies will be available for purchase at the event.

The film, Alignment is everywhere, is a 22-minute poetic portrait of Deborah Hay, as she reflects on life, death and her work as an artist and human being. In January 2019, Hay spent a week at the Australian coastal township of Indented Head to visit the home of her close friend and colleague, Margaret Cameron. Cameron, a theatre maker and poet, died of cancer a few years earlier. Peter Humble created the film on expired and hand processed 16mm film with a hand crank camera. David Young served as production assistant. Alignment is everywhere premiered in 2019 at the Tanz im August festival in Berlin as part of Deborah Hay’s retrospective titled RE-Perspective Deborah Hay: Works from 1968 to the Present.
