TalkAbout: the meaning wavers

Stephanie Concepcion Ramirez is a Salvadoran-American artist from Prince George’s County, Maryland. She received her BFA at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA and her MFA at The University of Texas at Austin. Ramirez currently works and lives in League City, Texas. Ramirez’ practice combines the language of photography with site-specific installations and text. Her work is based on notions of memory, personal and historical amnesia that trace the veins of the Central American diaspora.

A native of Ethiopia, Betelhem Makonnen currently lives in Austin, Texas. She received an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago; completed graduate coursework at the School of Visual Arts of Parque Lage, Rio de Janeiro; and holds a BA in History and Literature of the African Diaspora from The University of Texas at Austin. Working with video, photography and installations, Makonnen researches questions on perception, presence and place as they relate to her diasporic consciousness. Makonnen is also a curator at Fusebox Festival and co-founder of the Black Mountain Project art collaborative.

Tammie Rubin is a sculptor who transforms familiar and trivial objects into mythic relics: surreal, dark, playful and sensual. Her works are intensely colored, technically complex, and intricately ornamented sculptural assemblages of everyday objects. Rubin completed her MFA in Ceramics at the University of Washington, and she received a BFA in Ceramics and Art History from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. She has exhibited nationally; selected solo exhibitions include de stijl Gallery, Austin, TX, Charak Gallery at Craft Alliance, St. Louis, MO, the Sarah M. Hurt Gallery at the Indianapolis Art Center, Indianapolis, IN, Art and Design Gallery at the University of Kansas, Lawrence, KS, and Pottery Northwest, Seattle, WA. Selected group exhibitions include Evansville Museum of Arts, History, & Science, IN, San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts, TX, Rockford Art Museum, IL, Mulvane Art Museum, KS, and Lillstreet Art Center, Chicago, IL. Rubin lives and works in Austin, TX, where she is an Assistant Professor of Sculpture & Ceramics at St. Edward’s University.

Rachel Stuckey is a moving image artist who works primarily with new media to question, parody, and endorse technology’s influence on human bodies, minds, and systems of belief.  She earned her MFA at The University of Texas at Austin. She is the Gallery Director at Women & Their Work  and founder of the Welcome to my Homepage Digital Artist Residency Program.
