Volunteer at Women & Their Work

Women & Their Work is an art organization located in Central Austin that serves as a catalyst for contemporary art created by women living and working in Texas and beyond. Volunteers and interns play an essential role in making our gallery a welcoming and vibrant space for all. There are many ways to get involved!

Volunteer Opportunities

RED DOT 2019

Red Dot is around the corner and we need your help!

This year’s event will feature over 150 works by some of the best contemporary artists in Texas. Artworks will be priced $750 and below, and all shopping that night will be tax free. A silent auction will offer items and services ranging from travel getaways to gift certificates to local restaurants. And of course, there will be food and drink!

We are looking for volunteers to help with check-in, art sales, food/ beverage service and silent auction assistance.

Visitor Experience

Volunteers welcome visitors to the gallery and offer information about the organization’s history and current exhibition. Visitor Experience Volunteers work a regular, assigned shift once a week or on alternating weekends for 2-4 hours.

  • Greet visitors and orient them to the gallery space, current exhibition, upcoming programs, and membership.

  • Answer questions regarding the history of Women & Their Work, as well as the current exhibition.

  • Ensure that the front desk area is stocked with up-to-date materials.

Gallery Operations

Volunteers hold weekday positions and serve one or more aspects of the gallery. Time commitments vary depending on the demands of the particular projects. We offer Internships with a semester-long time commitment from the student.

Events Volunteers

Only free in the evenings? Events Volunteers play an essential role during our art openings, member parties, fundraisers and other gallery events that typically take place in the evening and on weekends. Time commitment and duties varies by event.

  • Set up & take down

  • Front Door Greeter

  • Bartender

  • Photographer/videographer

  • General assistance

Most volunteer shifts occur during gallery hours Monday-Friday 10am-6pm and Saturdays 12pm-6pm. Volunteers of all genders are welcome!


Volunteers who donate 80+ hours in a calendar year receive complimentary Artist or Art Fan membership.

Fall Internships

Internship dates: September - December 2019 with the opportunity to continue through fall.

Interviews will begin in mid- August. Positions are open until filled.

Benefits include complimentary Artist or Art Fan membership at Women & Their Work.

Education & Interpretation

  • Help develop interpretive materials of exhibitions: gallery guides, in-gallery displays and interactive materials for a variety of audiences.
  • Assist with the planning and implementation of education programs in the galleries.
  • Assist with researching and developing educational materials and curriculum for tours.
  • Lead student tours and assist with professional development program for teachers.
  • Support on and off-site activity and perform administrative work related to select education & public programs.
    Skills Needed
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills
    • Ability to multitask
    • Ability to work individually and as a team.

Gallery Assistant

  • Assists the Gallery Director and exhibiting artists with installations and de-installations, lighting, and gallery preparation.
  • Set up receptions and performances.
  • May handle routine correspondence with artists and community.
  • Candidate must be handy with tools, able to move bulky objects, open to learning new things.
    Skills Needed
    • Excellent oral communication skills
    • Team player


  • Assist with the planning, implementation, and promotion of our membership and fundraising programs.
  • Assist with the planning and coordination of our annual fundraising event, Red Dot.
  • Assist with the planning and coordination of membership events.
  • Coordinate and assemble mailings for fundraising.
  • Research and develop strategies to increase sponsors, members, and donors.
  • Process memberships and assist with database management.
  •  Attend outreach events in the community to increase visibility and volunteers/donors.
    Skills Needed
    • Excellent communication skills
    • Strong attention to detail


  • Develop marketing campaigns for exhibitions, programs and events.
  • Assist with newsletter content and email marketing campaigns.
  • Provide support to online, social media efforts to target new audiences.
  • Assist with creation and distribution of promotional materials.
  • Update and maintain press archives.
  • Act as Gallery Attendant providing visitor services, as needed.
    Skills Needed
    • Proficiency in iOS and Mac processing
    • Strong attention to detail
    • Excellent written communication skills

Visitor & Volunteer Services

  • Help develop interpretive gallery materials of exhibitions for a variety of audiences.
  • Act as Gallery Attendant providing visitor services.
  • Assist with the coordination of volunteers for events and front desk duties.
  • Assist with the recruitment of volunteers for visitor services and events.
  • Update and maintain volunteer information.
    Skills Needed
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills
    • Strong attention to detail
