Fresh from the Studio

Fresh from the Studio invites W&TW artist members to share what they are working on now with you! In this virtual format, artists will share work in progress, newly finished artworks, and recent or upcoming projects. Each presentation will be about 10 minutes with time for your questions and comments afterwards. Fresh from the Studio is your chance to see what is new and hear from contemporary artists. This program is free and open to the public.

This edition of Fresh from the Studio we will hear from artists Mayuko Ono Gray, Paloma Mayorga & Sara Vanderbeek who will all be featured in our upcoming Red Dot Art Spree.

About the Artists

Mayuko Ono Gray is a Houston Texas based artist whose main medium is graphite drawing. Born in Gifu Japan, she was trained in traditional Japanese calligraphy in her young childhood; later in her teenage she was trained in classical Western drawing. After graduating from high school in Japan, she moved to the U.S. She earned her MFA in painting from the University of Houston main campus in 2007. Her works are represented by Hooks-Epstein galleries in Houston TX and Galeria 910 in Oaxaca Mexico, and her works have been exhibited internationally in Tokyo Japan (two-people), Oaxaca Mexico (solo x3), Rome, Italy (group), and Berlin Germany (group).

Paloma Mayorga is an interdisciplinary artist and independent curator based in Austin, Texas. She earned a B.A. in Painting from the Sarofim School of Fine Arts at Southwestern University in 2010, and has gone on to receive the Emerging Artist Award from the Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center in 2015, Best Visual Artist by the Austin Chronicle 2017 Reader’s Poll, and Southwestern University’s 18 Under 40 Award for 2020. Currently, her work can be found on artsy.net, on view at The LINE Austin, and at The Contemporary Austin Jones Center this fall.

Sara Vanderbeek is a Texas-based interdisciplinary artist and curator who creates concept-driven series focused on portraiture and social practice. Her work contextualizes autobiographical experiences and responds to culture, politics, and trauma. She has engaged in projects at venues nationally, including the McNay Art Museum (San Antonio, TX); The Contemporary Austin (Austin, TX); Deitch Projects (New York, NY); and the 2013 Texas Biennial at Blue Star Contemporary (San Antonio, TX). In 2020, she and her partner Eric Manche collaborated on a mural for the Facebook lobby as part of their Open Arts program. Vanderbeek is the Founding Executive Director and Curator at DORF, an alternative gallery that provides space for regional artists, community organizing, and activism. She is the recipient of numerous awards including Best New Experimental Art Space by the Austin Chronicle, grants from the Cultural Arts Division of the City of Austin Economic Development Department. Most recently, she is a finalist for the 2022 Artpace International Artist-In-Residence Program and is a recipient of the 2021 Interchange Grant, a program of Mid-America Arts Alliance with support from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Vanderbeek’s projects have been covered by Austin Chronicle, Glasstire, Sightlines, Arts and Culture Texas, ArtDaily, and more. She received her BFA from Rhode Island School of Design in 2003.
