In her large-scale installation, Jade Walker uses color, weaving, rope, tools, notions of signage, and found objects to articulate questions around how we engage with our environment and the effect that this relationship has on our society.
Wayfinding asks: do we embed in our landscape or do we attain places to hold as our own? Influenced by the Modernist writer and poet, Nan Shepherd, nature writer and linguist, Robert Mcfarlane, and textiles as a form of universal language, Walker’s exhibition includes architectural interventions as well as intimate embellishments of familiar tools and found natural elements. Inquiries into our intentions for cohabitating with nature on this planet point directly to the need for wayfinding as we navigate the environment for ourselves and for future generations.
About the Artist
Jade Walker is a sculptor and an active member of the arts community living in Austin, Texas. She received her BFA from The University of Florida and her MFA from The University of Texas at Austin. Walker’s soft sculptures consist of her personal struggle with spectatorship, binaries within gender and race, abstraction, narrative, found objects, desire, and the body as temporal. Her work has been included in solo exhibitions at the Elisabet Ney Museum (Austin, TX), the Austin Museum of Art (now The Contemporary Austin), Blue Star Contemporary Arts (San Antonio, TX), Dimension Gallery (Austin, TX), Lawndale Art Center (Houston, TX), The Museum of Pocket Art (Austin, TX and traveling).

En su instalación a gran escala, Jade Walker utiliza el color, el tejido, la cuerda, las herramientas, las nociones de señalización y los objetos encontrados para articular cuestiones en torno a cómo nos relacionamos con nuestro entorno y el efecto que esta relación tiene en nuestra sociedad.
Wayfinding se pregunta: ¿nos integramos en nuestro paisaje o conseguimos lugares para tenerlos como propios? Influenciada por la escritora y poetisa modernista Nan Shepherd, el escritor y lingüista de la naturaleza Robert Mcfarlane y los tejidos como forma de lenguaje universal, la exposición de Walker incluye intervenciones arquitectónicas, así como embellecimientos íntimos de herramientas familiares y elementos naturales encontrados. La indagación en nuestras intenciones de cohabitar con la naturaleza en este planeta apunta directamente a la necesidad de orientarnos a la hora de navegar por el medio ambiente para nosotros mismos y para las generaciones futuras.
Sobre la Artista
Jade Walker es escultora y miembro activo de la comunidad artística de Austin, Texas. Se licenció en Bellas Artes (BFA) por la Universidad de Florida y obtuvo un máster en Bellas Artes por la Universidad de Texas en Austin. Las esculturas blandas de Walker consisten en su lucha personal con el espectador, los binarios dentro del género y la raza, la abstracción, la narrativa, los objetos encontrados, el deseo y el cuerpo como algo temporal. Su obra ha sido incluida en exposiciones individuales en el Museo Elisabet Ney (Austin, TX), el Museo de Arte de Austin (ahora The Contemporary Austin), Blue Star Contemporary Arts (San Antonio, TX), Dimension Gallery (Austin, TX), Lawndale Art Center (Houston, TX), The Museum of Pocket Art (Austin, TX y itinerante).
