Join us for a conversation in the gallery with exhibiting artist Jessica Mallios, art historian and curator Erina Duganne, and historian Sara Damiano who will discuss some of the many themes addressed in Mallios’ exhibition, Signaling Light.

ABOUT THE PANELISTS

Jessica Mallios is an artist and educator based in San Marcos, TX. She earned an MFA from Bard College and is an Associate Professor in the School of Art and Design at Texas State University. Her work is guided by an abiding interest in the physicality of light and space, explored through photographic, time-based, and installation practices. Her research-based approach responds to sites and structures of cultural and architectural significance. Select exhibitions include Atelier Siegele Foundation in Darmstadt, Germany; Higher Pictures in New York, NY; The Contemporary Austin in Austin, TX; Oregon Contemporary in Portland, OR; Artpace in San Antonio, TX; Torrance Art Museum in Los Angeles, CA; The Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, TX; The Center for Ongoing Research & Projects in Columbus, OH; and the Contemporary Arts Museum in Houston, TX. Her work has been featured in Artforum, Art Ltd, The New Yorker, and Whitewall Magazine, among other publications. 

Erina Duganne is Professor of Art History at Texas State University where she teaches courses on contemporary art, photography, and visual culture. Her research and writing focus mostly on contemporary art and its intersection with solidarity practices, intersectional feminisms, and documentary practices. She is editor of the Americas for the journal Photography & Culture and co-editor for the book series Feminist Art Histories with Rutgers University Press.

Sara T. Damiano is a historian of women and gender in early America and the Atlantic World. Damiano’s researches focus on individuals, especially women, who possessed limited access to formal political and economic power and who are seldom centered in eighteenth-century historical sources. Damiano teaches undergraduate and graduate courses on early America, the Atlantic world, law and society, capitalism and economic culture, and American women’s and gender history at Texas State University.
