Thu Apr 18, 2024

Join us for a conversation in the gallery with exhibiting artist, Alejandra Almuelle, and artist and curator, Paloma Mayorga who will discuss some of the many themes addressed in Almuelle’s exhibition, Circular Body.

TalkAbout is a program that facilitates thought provoking conversations with artists and the people who inspire them. This event is free and open to the public. RSVP strongly encouraged.

Paloma Mayorga is a Mexican American interdisciplinary artist and independent curator born and based in Austin, Texas. She earned a BA in Painting from the Sarofim School of Fine Arts at Southwestern University, and has gone on to exhibit her work across Texas and nationally. Most recently, her work was exhibited at ArtPrize in Grand Rapids, MI, Artpace in San Antonio, TX, The Contemporary Austin, and Big Medium in Austin, TX. Mayorga also received the Emerging Artist Award from the Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center, Best Visual Artist by the Austin Chronicle Reader’s Poll, and Southwestern University’s 18 Under 40 Award.

Alejandra Almuelle was born in Arequipa, Peru. She spent a few years in Pizac, in the Sacred Valley of Cuzco, a center for ceramic making. Peru is a country in which the abundance of clay has made this medium a language of artistic expression. However, it wasn’t until she moved to Austin that Almuelle began using the material. She is equally interested in the functionality of the medium as well as its sculptural expression. As a base medium, she feels that clay is appropriate for expressing the human journey because it is the stuff we are made of.
